I never knew that I'd like abstract art. Especially not something that seemed like meaningless fields of color or stripes.
But then I read a small article in a magazine about Marc Rothko, and became obsessed!
He doesn't paint abstract or decorative art. He says that it's realism, brought to level of music, where everything is shown in color.
The artist was a complete denier of materialism. He was asked to do four paintings for a restaurant in a new high building in New York for biggest fee he had ever been offered. He painted them, but in the end, kept them for himself because he couldn't bare the thought of this work being displayed as appetizing for people who ate money instead of food. He said that they would never ever understand his paintings.
